About

CodeKnit pieces showcase the power and beauty of bringing technology and creativity together.

Each CodeKnit design turns words into ASCII binary code, then represents them through a machine knitting technique or 'design hack'. Each design hack can be customised with different words, with the corresponding 0's and 1's creating a bespoke pattern while still visually linked to the original hack.

The designs

There are currently two design hacks for CodeKnit.

The Fair Isle design hack turns words into binary code, the 0's and 1's are then represented in a repeating, flowing

fair isle pattern.

The Tuck Lace design hack

represents 0's and 1's through spaces in the fabric, over which a tuck lace 1x1 pattern is applied creating a honeycomb lace.

The why

Creativity and the creative arts have been devalued as a critical skill for the future in education, government policy and business. However there is ample evidence of its real world business impact, both through the economic value of the creative industries and beyond in the business world. It is critical we refocus and revalue creativity as a skill that is essential alongside the technology that is

driving our future.
